The Survivors

Yes, Yes, Yes! This book deserves to be getting much more positive press than it is right now. From start to finish, I was captivated. Although at first it seems to be about a group of witches, which is already done, the book takes a different twist.

Think December 1692, Salem Mass. 24 people have died for accusations of witchcraft. Now, 26 more, all children, have been accused of witchcraft, by one, very prominent man. With so much death already, the leaders of the town decide that exile is better, and the kids are taken away with almost no chance of survival. Although some die on the journey, 14 remain, and are left in the middle of winter with only the threadbare clothes on their backs. Yet, they are still surviving. And all these years later, they continue to survive.

Now picture modern day society, and a 140+ year old girl that looks like she is 21. She is 6 ft tall and has long, brown hair to her waist, skin that is perfect and glistens, and oh yeah, she has purple eyes. To say that it is hard for Sadie to fit in is an understatement. Although her beauty is rare, she has multiple problems.

Firstly, she just broke up with her boyfriend, because she was not intimate enough with him. Also, her best friend is setting her up with the perfect guy, but Sadie knows that entering a human relationship again is not wise. To complicate matters even more, she can hear the thoughts of human around her, which is a unique matter on its own. See, no one in her family has this talent, and they do not even consider her talents to be powers. She is different than her family in another way, too. She Left. She escaped. Although everyone else in her commune was always happy, she felt imprisoned. After all, living with 100+ immortals that have no idea of the outside world is difficult, let alone the fact since everyone is family, she doesn't even know who her true parents are.

To make matters worse, she sees someone like her one day on the outside, even though she was always told this was impossible. There were no others like them, and she was the only one to ever escape. That is what she is told. But when she sees a man named Mark kill another man in the woods, she knows he is like her. As she is trying to figure it all out, he visits her, and says if she tries to track him, she will destroy her family.

Sadie sets out to warn them, and ultimately ends up searching for Mark. When she does, she meets another man Everett, and immediately cannot control her feelings. Mark and Everett invite her to meet their family, and she realizes that this family is not a threat. In fact, Mark and Everett's sister Ginny becomes her best friend, and their parents become as close to her as her real family. More importantly though, the families decide to meet and assess if they are really the same kind of supernatural.

The meeting does not go as planned, and ultimately the remainder of the book centers around Sadie being pulled in two directions: loyalty to her old family or her new. It becomes much more difficult for her to make her decision when she finds out that her new family is not the same type of supernatural as her, and she is disgusted about what she knows about their kind.

Ultimately, her decision becomes easier when she realizes that both her families will be allies, when she sees a premonition of the upcoming war. Although she has a docile nature, she must now learn to fight.

The book ends there, and I cannot wait for the next book to come out. Hopefully, you could follow my review. I wanted to intrigue you, without giving away true identities and too much plot information. Feel free to message me with any questions!

I truly reccomend. It will keep you wanting more. Though at first it may be slow because your really not sure whats going on but it gets so much better.

The characters were very dynamic and relatable. The premise was unique and the use of history and mythology to build the world within the book are extremely interesting! A little slow to start, but once you get all the major "figuring it all out" stuff out of the way it's super addictive. Once you get hooked, it's really hard to put down... definitely can't wait for the rest of the series!
