Her musical abilities affect inspires both adoration and envy in the people around her. James Kent falls in love with her while another man wants to marry her to his son for financial gain. Her world is transformed by a series of 3 tragedies foretold by a gypsy when she is a child. The last of these events silences her music and robs her of her memory of what happened. She finds herself married to James and living in a Scottish castle without any recollection of how she got there. Despite his love for her, James must create a web of lies to protect her from the truth of what really happened and why. As Dahlia regains her memory and learns the truth, only the realization of what true love really is will bring her back from the brink of despair and allow her music to complete her once again.

Dahlia's Music is a well-written story of a young woman's life in Victorian England and Scotland that really conveys what it was like to live then - the restraints for girls/women and the differences in society from today. At its heart, though, it's a love story that spans several years and goes beyond just the boy and girl getting together. Dahlia and her beau, James, don't have the impediments to their relationship found in other period pieces (like differences in class, etc.). Although they like each other, they get married because of other events and THEN get to really know each other under very trying circumstances - she doesn't remember their wedding! The whole plot really comes along nicely - if a bit slowly at first, but every word just makes the characters like friends and when I finished the book, I kind of missed them. A sequal would be welcome!
Good Points
Great characters that are believable - each has their own strengths and weaknesses. Unique story line and the heroine, Dahlia, has the unusual ability to hear music in her head that she associates with people, animals, and places - unusual. Liked the gypsy storyline. Actually 3 loves stories tied into one, with 3 murders and intrigue.
