This series rocks so hard. Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep was another brilliant installment in the Mythos Academy series. This is a stay up all night reading approved book - as I stayed up til 5 AM to finish after starting it way too late. I meant to only read a few chapters and all at once I was turning the last page.

Dark Frost is more drama filled and a bit angtsier than its predecessors. I felt like Dark Frost really started to move the plot forward - not that it didn't in the previous two books, but big things happen in this one. I felt like one thing after the next happened and a lot of secrets were revealed. It was a delight to read and now I have so many questions for the rest of the series! There was a bit of the book where I was getting slightly annoyed with Logan and Gwen, as it felt a bit like they were beating down the same wall yet again. This was only for a bit of the book and I was completely on board by the time I finished.

Jennifer Estep really plays with your emotions in Dark Frost. I was so upset and sad at some parts, a bit frightened at others, and just about everything in between. I am really curious to see where Jennifer Estep will take the plot next. Her play on mythology is so interesting and I really cannot wait to see how it all pans out in the next installments in the series.

I just love the characters in this series. Nott was a character who I just loved. She was just lovely and really was one of my favorite things about Dark Frost. Gwen is such a strong heroine who has such spunk. I loved seeing more of Grandma Frost in this installment, as she is a total hoot! Logan is such a delightfully complex character and I loved that this was the book we finally find out a bit more about him. Plus, he is a total hunk. I also loved seeing more of some more minor characters like Morgan in this one. I felt like this was a book where I really got to know some of the more minor characters.

I am just obsessed with the Mythos Academy series. I love the characters, the plot, the mythology, the romance. All of it. And Dark Frost only fed my addiction, and now Crimson Frost, book 4's release cannot come soon enough. I need more of my Logan fix and some more action and adventure from the whole Mythos Academy crew. Basically, Jennifer Estep just nailed this one. The Mythos Academy series is probably my favorite series in YA right now and I am already counting down the days until Crimson Frost's release.

Finally. Finally Jennifer Estep has given me a book that I’ve been craving. What I didn’t like the most about her previous two Mythos Academy books was that they seemed like petty mysteries. (Oh, and I’m totally going to spoil the books right here, so if you haven’t read them yet, I’d suggest looking away.) In the first one, a girl faked her own murder so that her best friend and her boyfriend, who were hooking up behind her back, would feel bad. That’s a silly motive for a fake murder. And then in the second book, the brother of the girl who faked her murder wanted to kill Gwen because he thought she killed his sister. Slightly better, but still silly. But FINALLY, we get a good mystery here: Gwen is trying to find the girl who murdered her mom.

Once again, I was a bit bothered by the repeating information from the previous novels, but that could also (once again) be because I read this back-to-back from the prequel. And once again, I was really bothered by how predictable the book was, since I was certain that so-and-so was Loki’s champion long before her identity was revealed. AND I knew where her mom was hiding the Helheim dagger. (Seriously, nothing fools me these days.)

I still liked Gwen’s snarky attitude though and the new twist on her touch magic. The characters in this novel were really fun, though a little clichéd, of course. But my favorite characters are always non-human: Vic (a sword) and Nott (a Fenrir wolf). Because Vic is just HILARIOUS and Nott is just ADORABLE (though she can be frightening).

Jennifer Estep did make an attempt to make Gwen less stupid, so I’m happy about that. ‘Cause Gwen actually sort-of guessed right at Loki’s champion’s identity, though I honestly still think she should have gotten the clue way before.

I was irritated with the romance in this book. Sure, Logan and Gwen both have admitted that they liked each other, but are they doing anything about it? No. Really, could they give it a try? But the ending satisfied me enough, along with that excerpt from Crimson Frost.

Dark Frost is a promising novel; the ending tells of more to come, both plot-wise and romance-wise. Even though I was unsatisfied with its predictability, I know that I will eagerly await Crimson Frost.

I can safely say that the third book in this series is my favorite so far! It has risen above all my expectations.

My minor annoyance with the constant repeating of previous information continues, but I endured. I just scanned those pages quickly-- hence the 5 hour read time on this one. I did a good deal of scanning at times. Sigh.

BUT, the plot was soooo much better in this book. That I wasn't disappointed in. I was guessing up until the last 50 pages! Whoop. Yes, I still figured out who the ultimate bad guy was way before Gwen did, but that's ok. I even figured out Gwen's new power early on, but there were still enough surprises to hold my interest.

For all those Logan Quinn fans out there, hold on to your seats. He ups the steamy factor in this one. Swoon. Logan makes my toes curl. However, my favorite character in this book happens to be Oliver. I love the transformation he has made from the second book. He is one of Gwen's fiercest allies now, and he really pulls through for her in this book. Another interesting aspect of the characters in this book is the subtle change (and not so subtle change) many of the characters undergo. Yes, some of the changes are more obvious-- developing new powers, faces long surpressed fears, etc. But some characters (like Morgan) are really turning out to be full of surprises. I have a feeling she is going to be HUGE in book 4, Crimson Frost.

Speaking of future surprises, what is up with Raven? Anyone else suspect that there might be something deeper and more sinister with this so-called protector? I think there might be something there. As promised, the plot is so much better in this book. The action is non-stop, which you experience from the first chapter. The constant battle with Loki is only beginning and I have a feeling that book 4 is going to be epic.

Dark Frost is my favorite Mythos Academy book so far, hands down. The characters were better written this time around. They had so much more depth than in the previous books. Gwen's conflict over her new powers was heart breaking. You could feel her inner turmoil over her decisions. The plot was also more developed. The door was left wide open for the next book, and I can only imagine what is going to happen. Too bad we have to wait until January 2013 to find out!
