Sunlight is as scarce as food, and cities are becoming increasingly violent as people loot and kill in order to maintain their existence. Sixteen-year-old Miles Newell knows that the only chance his family has of surviving is to escape from their Minneapolis suburban home to their cabin in the woods, As the Newells travel the highways on Miles' supreme invention, the Ali Princess, they have high hopes for safety and peace. But as they venture deeper into the wilderness, they begin to realize that it's not only city folk who have changed for the worse.

In the aftermath of a huge volcanic erruption, the world is in chaos. Food is running out. Ash covers everything and people must wear masks to keep their lungs clear. And as the situation deteriorates, it becomes survival of the fittest, the most resourceful, and those who are willing to adapt.

The story moves quickly and is written in a spare, concise style that delivers the bare bones of the story with a few additional observations and little else. It's the perfect fast-paced adventure for readers who love survival stories and who don't need a flashy emotional arc. That's not to say there isn't an emotional arc. Each main character is expertly portrayed and each goes through some growth and change during the story, especially Miles' father. I would've loved a bit more depth and lingering on those relationships and on some of the action. The story felt like it was over too fast. (Which is actually a compliment to the author!)

However, my teenage son read this book and had zero complaints. He devoured it faster than I've ever seen him read a book before and immediately began asking me for the sequel. There was just enough action and emotion to satisfy him, so I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy survival adventures. :)
