What is your blue like? A lyrical ode to colors — and the unique ways we experience them — follows a little girl as she explores the world with her family and friends.

Your neighbor says red is angry like a dragon’s breath, but you think it’s brave like a fire truck. Or maybe your best friend likes pink because it’s pretty like a ballerina’s tutu, but you find it annoying — like a piece of gum stuck on your shoe. In a subtle, child-friendly narrative, art teacher and debut author Jessica Young suggests that colors may evoke as many emotions as there are people to look at them — and opens up infinite possibilities for seeing the world in a wonderful new way.

MY BLUE IS HAPPY is a lovely story that beautifully demonstrates how two people can look at the same thing and take away different things, and how both perceptions can be okay. The pictures and colors are vivid, and the prose flows simply but fluidly. On the surface, it helps kids engage with the colors around them a bit more (my kindergartner proudly brought her copy in for Color Week at school, and the whole class loved MY BLUE's fresh take on what they were learning), but when you dig deeper down, it encourages children to see the world through wider lenses, and not to be afraid to embrace their own unique perspective. I can't recommend it enough.

MY BLUE IS HAPPY is a fresh, engaging story that encourages young readers to celebrate seeing the world through their own unique lens. Colors and what they mean are explored through the eyes of the narrator, who comments on how someone else sees a color (Her brother thinks that red is angry, like a dragon's fiery breath.) and then gives her own unique perspective (She thinks red is brave like a firetruck.). The illustrations are friendly and colorful, and each captures the mood of the color being discussed (both versions of the color's interpretation) perfectly.

This is a lovely book with an important message that is perfectly written and illustrated in a way that will capture young readers. I highly recommend it.
