Sophronia's first year at Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality has certainly been rousing! For one thing, finishing school is training her to be a spy (won't Mumsy be surprised?). Furthermore, Sophronia got mixed up in an intrigue over a stolen device and had a cheese pie thrown at her in a most horrid display of poor manners. Now, as she sneaks around the dirigible school, eavesdropping on the teachers' quarters and making clandestine climbs to the ship's boiler room, she learns that there may be more to a school trip to London than is apparent at first. A conspiracy is afoot--one with dire implications for both supernaturals and humans. Sophronia must rely on her training to discover who is behind the dangerous plot-and survive the London Season with a full dance card. In this sequel to bestselling author Gail Carriger's YA debut Etiquette & Espionage, class is back in session with more petticoats and poison, tea trays and treason. Gail's distinctive voice, signature humor, and lush steampunk setting are sure to be the height of fashion this season.

From ballgowns and bowler hats, to parties and prototypes, Curtsies & Conspiracies will capture your attention, your mind and your heart.

Not only is it intriguing, with a collection of twisting plots and mysteries to solve, but it's a book filled with laughs and an endless array of gadgets that any sane young woman would love to see up close! Not to mention Sophronia, who is definitely one of my favourite YA heroines - with a tonne of pluck, a resourceful mind and a knack for getting into all sorts of trouble :)

This book left me dying to read more of Gail Carriger's ingenious steampunk series...Waistcoats & Weaponry cannot come soon enough!

I must be completely honest right up front – I’m a huge fan of Gail Carriger’s. I adored her Parasol Protectorate series. It was one of the most inventive and funny fantasy series I have read in a long, long time. When she started the Finishing School series, she became even more inventive and I’m glad to say the second book continues in the same fashion. This book is laugh out loud in public totally embarrassing yourself funny in places.

Sophronia is still a wonderful protagonist. She is daring, loyal and just a little too curious for her own good. All the the things you want in a main character. The supporting cast is full of insanely interesting characters, especially if you have read the Parasol Protectorate series. There is lots of lovely little spots of foreshadowing that will keep fans of that series delighted. Also, who can resist a 10 year old Genevieve ‘Vieve’ Lefoux? She almost deserves her own series of books. Also, I challenge anyone to read these books and not want their very own Bumbersnoot.

In this book Sophronia grows up a little and takes her first steps into adulthood, especially where the opposite sex is involved. This was handled beautifully, with just the right amount of angst and humour. It will be interesting to see how Sophronia handles being noticed by the opposite sex as the series continues. Somehow I doubt she will do it the conventional way.

This book is just perfect when you need a little absurdity in your life and break from the sometimes way too serious fantasy genre. I can’t wait for the next book to be released.
