It's New Zealand, 1914, and the biggest war the world has known has just broken out in Europe. William eagerly enlists for the army but his younger brother, Edmund, is a conscientious objector and refuses to fight. While William trains to be a soldier, Edmund is arrested. Both brothers will end up on the bloody battlefields of France, but their journeys there are very different. And what they experience at the front line will challenge the beliefs that led them there.

This book is perfect for a classroom discussion about whether war is good or bad, right or wrong, justifiable or not. Aimed at high school readers aged 11+, there is plenty to involve both boys and girls here.
Good Points
The story is told from the point of view of each brother alternately. Their opposing views with regard to the coming war mean that a rift develops between them. Both struggle with the choices they have made. The treatment of the pacifist brother at the hands of the army challenges his beliefs and his determination to stick by them. The reality of war is a terrible shock to the other brother who had dreams of bravery and glory.
