"Pirates are unruly and pirates love to fight, but pirates still say 'please' and 'thanks' 'cause pirates are polite."

Are Pirates Polite? shows pirates' rowdy activities and teaches manners lessons. These pirates remember to say "please" and "thank you." If pirates can be polite, surely young readers can, too!

Fun, rhyming text by Corinne Demas and Artemis Roehrig pairs pirates' questionable activities with their lead-by-example lessons in manners. David Catrow's humorous, zany illustrations depict the swashbuckling nature of the pirates. Follow along as pirates have fun on a pirate ship, divide up their treasure, and teach manners. Aargh!

A wonderfully written book that will keep children's rapt attentions.

Are Pirates Polite is a pretty self-explanatory title. Pirates are known for their unsavory or "questionable" behavior. They're crude and rowdy, but does that have to mean they're ill-mannered. This story pairs each crude action with a polite "thank you" or "please" or one of the many other mannered phrases, showing that even at the worst of times, manners matter.
It's an incredibly fun read. The rhymes roll easy off the tongue making it continuously pleasant as your tot makes you read it for the hundredth time. The writing is creative and full of great imagery.
The images were a bit too life-like. Pirates as we see them are not pleasant looking men, especially for kids. Even the goofiness in many of the pictures couldn't erase the ick factor in others, leaving readers with a yearning for more cartoon-like or more illustrated pirates.
In the end, this book is sure to impress young kids with it's endless fun, creative writing, and cool topic.
