Seventeen-year-old Imogen Reiner has extraordinary abilities. She can read emotions, the coloured spectrum of auras unseen by anyone else. Struggling to know why, and unable to make sense of the mismatched memories of her past, she is haunted by a dark, recurring nightmare. What happened when she was a child, and was it the cause of her mother’s ten-year coma? Her Granddad has taught her how to conceal her gifts, but is frustratingly silent on the answers to these questions. When the seductive Araz enrolls at her college, Imogen senses danger. Is he the enemy? She learns that there is a powerful piece of advanced technology responsible for the blanks in her memory and that a corrupt regime is willing to do whatever it takes to get their hands on it. When it becomes clear that Araz is tied to this dark conspiracy, Imogen and her besotted trainer, Leo, must find a way to escape his clutches and save Imogen’s family—a family that turns out not to be quite who she believed they were, herself included. Can she come to terms with her newly discovered identity before the shadows of her past catch up with her?

A different take on magical abilities.

The Story:
Imogen has lived her life with the ability to read emotions and no idea why. She must keep it a secret from those around her outside of her family. When her grandfather who raised her, decides it is finally time for her to know the truth, he enlists the help of an old friend Leo, but Leo is part of a bigger secret that she may not quite be ready for.
Enter the new kid at school. He's dark and mysterious. Imogen senses danger. But is that danger tied to who he is or is it about the larger happenings around them?

What I loved:
I quickly found myself rooting for Leo. Each of the characters has some great qualities that make it easy to root for them. The story itself is intriguing. I loved the broader conspiracy and all of the different elements that were put into play. Any book with time travel is a huge win. This story was exciting.

What was just okay for me: As much as I liked each character individually, there's no chemistry between any of them. Even the love story, which is usually a slow burn, fell flat. One moment they hated each other and couldn't trust each other and the next they were kissing. Parts of the story had me confused and others had me wanting to skim. They'd quickly be followed by some very well-written and exciting chapters. I wish it all could have been like that. The emotion reading also became a bit too much.

Final Verdict:
A fast-paced, exciting story unlike anything you've ever read before.
