When a pair of faerie wings fetch big bucks online, 17-yo Lila Kincade realizes her kind aren’t just oppressed; they’re hunted. Due to prejudice and hostility by humans, half-human/half-faerie Lila lives in a world where faeries are required to register with the government and bind their wings in order to look like everyone else. Lila is haunted by repetitive dreams involving a shack in the woods, and when photos of dismembered wings appear in her school locker, she soon realizes that she is the killer’s prime target. As faerie corpses pile up around her, Lila embarks on a mission to save her race from extinction. She must figure out who she can trust and stop the killer before she—and all faeries— are obliterated forever. Kristi Helvig is the best-selling author of BURN OUT (Egmont USA/Lerner Publishing), which Kirkus Reviews called “a scorching series opener not to be missed.”

Feedback

The Wing Collector by Kristin Helving was a very enjoyable read! This was a very interesting approach to the fairy world. After an increased amount of fairies being killed and their wings being stripped, Lila must be more discreet than ever. She is usually quiet in school resulting in her being an ideal student and not standing out, too much. However, Ash Cooper changes everything. After meeting him she has found herself being more outgoing and social, which is the exact opposite of what she should be doing. The tension in this book oozes off the page. You are rooting for Lila to break out of her shell but at the same time you are so worried about her being cautious. When Lila finds the wings being ripped off of other fairies, you feel her pain. The hurt and curious in the book were done so well. I really felt like the story progression was perfect. We are given background information as the story unfolds instead of a huge chunk at once. I find this approach to be the most entertaining. I really enjoyed learning the history between the fairies and humans in this world. I also feel that the thriller part of this novel was executed so well. The parts in the book that were meant to make you heart race, actually did. When Lila was frightened, my anxiety rose with her. The plot and the development of this story coincided perfectly together.

Lila was a great main character to follow. Hiding behind baggy clothes her whole life, it was really nice to see her open up. While this took time and was not easy for her, we were able to watch her character really grow. I loved Ash for Lila and how protective he was of her. His life had been affected in other ways to make him really relatable on his feelings for Lila. A lot of the characters fit into the book really well, but most were standard. I do feel like they were perfect for their roles but I was not really surprised by some of the outcomes that happened throughout the book. Some of the characters were really predictable. This, however, did not take anything away from the story or the plot.

Final Thoughts

Overall, The Wing Collector by Kristin Helving was an amazing read. I loved the plot and the development of the story. I found myself not wanting to put this book down because I truly wanted to know what happened next. Most of the scenes kept my on the edge of my seat. While some of the characters did fall a little short for me, Lila and Ash were very good main characters. I especially loved Lila. I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy fantasy and want a little bit of a different fairy scene.

Wow oh wow. Where to start? THE WING COLLECTOR is a completely original take on a faerie story and is now in my list of favorites. In this world, faeries on Earth are half-faeries. The full blooded ones have been killed off, but the half-faeries are still looked down on like they're vermin. Because of that, they remain hidden and bind their wings to their backs.

Lila has always felt different from everyone else. Like she doesn't belong anywhere. Being half-faerie has made her reclusive out of fear of being discovered. But when the new kid Ash starts talking to her, Lila feels drawn in. With him, she feels alive for the first time ever.

However, the happiness is bittersweet since it's dangerous for him to know the real her. Top it all of with a serial killer collecting the wings of half-faeries and Lila is at her wits end. But there's more to her than she knows and when secrets come to light, Lila realizes what she must do.

Final Verdict: I absolutely loved the romance and mystery elements to this story. I would recommend it to fans of faeries, murder mysteries, and romance. This is one original story that fantasy fans won't want to miss either.
