He’s on the hunt for a fresh start. She’s trapped in a nightmare she can’t escape. Can love help them make a break for freedom? Michael: The money was supposed to save me...until it got me shot. You don’t steal from Marlo Sloan. But it led me to her. Annie’s kind. She’s fierce. She’s making me want to be the man my grandpa believed I could be. A Barrett - strong, dependable. A hero. Danger is coming. It’s inevitable. I should split before it catches up with me. But how can I leave Annie and her little brother with their psycho father? I want to steal her away from this nightmare. Take her to the ranch where I know she’d be safe. But I’m a runaway thief, and the ranch is no doubt a desolate wreck. She deserves better than that. I have to tell her the truth. Which means she’ll never look at me the same again. I could lose her over this, when all I want to do is keep her safe. Grandpa always said, “Barrett boys do the right thing. They don’t cut and run. They stand. They fight to protect the ones they love.” I was raised to be a Barrett boy. It’s time I start acting like one. The Runaway is the first book in a thrilling YA romance series. If you like fast-paced action, redeemable bad boys and romance that will steal your heart, then you’ll love Jordan Ford’s compelling novel.

Annie lives in a small town where everyone knows everything about each other. She is usually the subject of the town's whispers due to an incident with her mother and feels trapped with her abusive stepfather. She dreams of getting out one day, but has to make sure she has enough money to take her brother Jackson with her. That's a hard thing to do when Dean, her stepdad, wants all of the money she makes.

Michael is tired of living a bad life. He was dealt a short hand in life and got sucked into the world of thieving and crime. Acting on impulse, Michael steals a bag of money hoping to get out. However, he's shot in the process and is forced to stop in a small town along the way. Here, he meets Annie.

Not one to turn a blind eye to those in need, Annie helps Michael, even though she doesn't know a thing about him. The two connect in ways that they never have with anyone else. While one is trying to run away from his past, the other is trying to run away from her present. When the past and present collides, drama is bound to unfold and they'll have to rely on each other to make it through.

THE RUNAWAY is a young adult romance that will take ahold of your heart. It's a story about two teens who want a better life for themselves, which is endearing and makes you love both Annie and Michael. Both characters are so sweet and have huge hearts even though other people don't take notice of it. I love the connection Michael and Annie form and the way everything plays out was written beautifully. It had me gripping onto each page, hoping things would work out for the two.

Final Verdict: I would recommend this book to fans of romance, coming of age, discovering yourself, and drama. THE RUNAWAY is the first installment of the Barrett Boys series and I look forward to reading the others. This Barrett boy stole my heart and I'm sure the others will to!

The Story:
Michael is running from the mistakes of his past, both his mistakes and the mistakes of others. Annie is living in a nightmare.
When Michael shows up at her diner, shot and trying to hide it, Annie knows she has to help him. What she doesn’t yet know is how he’ll help her in return with an abusive step-father and a plan to escape. But when his past catches up to him, it could destroy them both.

What I loved:
Pretty much everything. Told in first person, alternating POV, the story flows easily between scenes, making for a one-sitting reading it’s hard to regret. Annie is trying to be strong for her brother in a town that scorns her. She’s such a great character and demands respect at every turn. Michael... or Michael, the broken boy. He’s so endearing it’s hard to imagine how he got so mixed up with bad men. There’s insta-love here, but it’s insta-love between the reader and the character, not between characters.
Jordan Ford could write just about anything well and this story is no different.
And that ending... I mean, I knew where they’d end up, but it was exciting all the same.

What left me wanting more: The ending. Really, just the fact it ended at all.

Final verdict:
An engaging story full of characters to root for that won’t let you stop reading until the very last page.
