Hello, YABC!

Today we’re super excited to celebrate the cover reveal for THE ROW by J.R. Johansson, releasing October 11, 2016 from Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. Before we get to the cover, here’s a note from J.R.:

I’ve been waiting months to share this cover and start spreading the word about this book. THE ROW is a mystery about Riley and her family. She’s a teen girl with a father on death row. With over 1% of adult men in the USA in prison, I wanted to write a story about what it’s like to be in a situation like Riley’s. And I absolutely love this cover. Andrew Arnold and the creative team at Macmillan are geniuses. I love how this cover just reaches out and grabs your attention. Raw emotion seems to drip from every inch–from the tightly clenched fists to the contrast between the brightness of the jumpsuit and the monochrome of the skin. It’s perfect in every way. I hope you think so too! Huge thanks to YABooksCentral for helping me reveal this cover that I feel SO lucky to have. And good luck in the giveaway!

About the Book

Seventeen-year-old Riley Beckett is no stranger to prison. Her father is a convicted serial killer on death row who has always maintained that he was falsely accused. Riley has never missed a single visit with her father. She wholeheartedly believes that he is innocent.

Then, a month before the execution date, Riley’s world is rocked when, in an attempt to help her move on, her father secretly confesses to her that he actually did carry out the murders. He takes it back almost immediately, but she cannot forget what he’s told her. Determined to uncover the truth for her own sake, she discovers something that will forever change everything she’s believed about the family she loves.

  1. Kayla E says:

I think the cover and synopsis go quite well together. To me, the glaring orange of the prison jumpsuit sends the idea that reality is harsh like that color.

  2. Brenda Lionti says:

    Hello
    Thanks for the opportunity.
I really like that cover. The thing about Johansson’s books is that, even though their covers seem simple, they reflect in an honest way what the story is about. And especially this one, it gives me a feeling of rage but also desperation, which I love.
And what can I say about the synopsis? It’s just perfect. A girl that finds out a horrible truth, and it’s connected to a dark past, and it’s about her own father? I’m in.

  3. Tasleema says:

The cover seems to really fit the synopsis well! I’m actually very intrigued to read this book, it sounds both interesting and unique.

  4. Linnea says:

This looks like my kind of thing. I can’t wait.

  5. Hello! I’m entering the contest. As for what I can say about the cover, it’s perfect! It’s simple, the colors are very well schemed and the font choice is very beautiful. I think it perfectly suits the summary well, a very intriguing book that you won’t be able to let go once you see it in a bookstore. For the summary, I can say that it caught my attention. It really gives me a feeling that it’s like some sort of an anti-hero story, or it gives the feeling of a marvel movie before some hero discovers his father is a bad guy. It looks really really good, and win or not, I’ll definitely buy it when it comes out. Good luck to everyone who joined the contest!

  6. Kara S says:

This sounds like a real page-turner of a plot — must read! Thanks! 🙂

This synopsis really got to me. I have many students who have parents in jail, and I’ve experienced it with family members as well. The cover is bold and gritty.

  13. Callie Wyles says:

The book cover is vivid and harsh, like I imagine the book will be. I think it is well suited to the book. It certainly grabbed my attention, and the synopsis kept it. I think this could be a very thought provoking and exciting book to read.

  14. Ianah says:

The= cover looks perfect for the book from what I read from the synopsis. The synopsis definitely has me intrigued. It’s making me think a lot about how the protagonist will change over time as well as her relationship with her father. Really looking forward to the mystery and drama in this book.

the cover and synopsis go well together. I want to know why a father on death row would tell his daughter that and then retract it. I have to know!

    Emotional… and heart-grabbing!

  18. Lillian says:

I love the cover, especially the grey skin contrasting with the orange jumpsuit. The story sounds amazing! I’ve been trying to read more thrillers so I will put this on my TBR list.

I’m not a huge fan of the cover, but the synopsis does sound interesting, and makes up for it!
