A school isn’t just a building; it is all the people who work and learn together. It is a place for discovery and asking questions. A place for sharing, for helping, and for community. It is a place of hope and healing, even when that community can’t be together in the same room. John Schu, a librarian and former ambassador of school libraries for Scholastic, crafts a loving letter to schools and the people that make up the communities within in a picture book debut beautifully illustrated by Veronica Miller Jamison.

THIS IS A SCHOOL is a cute picture book read about school and the community it represents. The book introduces schools, students, and the way that it all comes together. The book describes the ways that school is for learning, questions, making mistakes and learning from them, helping each other, and having fun. Through the pages, school and the joy of belonging come to life.
What I loved: This is a great introductory book for children who may be attending school for the first time. The book introduces school and the important functions of learning and being a part of the school community. The illustrations are great, capturing each part of the story as well as diverse children with several skin colors and abilities.
The text itself is relatively simple with short sentences and listing different qualities/elements of school throughout the story. This will work well for children who are entering school for the first time, such as for preschool or kindergarten. The book would also be a great pick for first week of school to help set a collaborative and engaging tone. As another cool feature, the dust jacket has a poster on the reverse side that would be cute for a classroom.
Final verdict: A cute picture book, THIS IS A SCHOOL introduces the community and importance of school to young readers. Recommend for children who are beginning school for the first time, particularly within the classroom setting.
