Betty and the Mysterious Visitor is about a little girl who stays with her grandma over the summer and they spend their days in the garden. Then one day their garden is torn up and Betty does some sleuthing to discover what creature is causing the problem. She is inventive and works hard to create a humane solution to the problem. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and busy just like Betty’s character. The illustrations remind me of wallpaper that you would find in a grandmother's house, this style works particularly well considering Betty is visiting her grandmother in a country setting. Overall, this is an engaging read that would be great if you love books about animals and spending time with grandparents. It would also work well on units of study such as summarizing and sequencing events, or finding the problem and solution in the story.

What I liked:
Betty and the Mysterious Visitor is a debut Children's picture book about an exceptional garden. Betty and her grandmother rely on the crops to help them make jam to sell at the local market. Betty is a determined child with a big imagination, and she hatches a crafty scheme to save the garden.
Final Verdict:
The author and illustrator have created a beautiful children's picture book with an easily solvable, relatable mystery. Who has not had a creature wreak havoc in a garden or flower bed and spent time figuring out how to save it? Young children will think Betty's tactics are creative, and adults will appreciate that the creature is not destroyed but merely scared away—a remarkable bedtime story for those who enjoy gardening and sharing special times with loved ones.
