Billy & Rose is a great next read for fans of Frog and Toad or Bear and Bird. The book is divided into four short stories with sentence structure mindful of beginning chapter book readers. Some of the words like serious and discussion may need grown-up help to read and understand but most of the words can be read by young Elementary age readers. Billy and Rose are two friends who often have different opinions but they work through them in a respectful way that makes them the best of friends. The watercolor-style illustrations convey the gentle and kind nature of these two friends. Overall, this is a great choice for a newly independent reader looking for longer book options with themes of friendship and kindness.
