Frolic in the snow with the animals at the National Zoo in Washington, DC, in a fun photographic board book created in collaboration with the Smithsonian.

The flamingos are a little chilly,
and the elephants are being silly.

What’s more fun than watching animals? Watching animals playing in the snow! Leopards are barely recognizable when they wear a white, snowy hat. Lions lounge regally, regardless of the cold. And pandas go crazy rolling in the soft white powder! With a rhyming text, photos of favorite animals, and doodles and drawings by illustrator Lala Watkins adding to the playful effect, this is a wintry treat for little ones—animal lovers and snow lovers alike.

SNOW DAY AT THE ZOO is a cute board book that shows what it's like for animals when it snows. The story is told with brief phrases and word art with accompanying images of photographed animals amidst illustrated scenes.

What I loved: This is a simple but fun concept that features a lot of different animals and all the fun of snow. The writing on each page is brief which is great for the youngest readers, and the photographed animals are adorable. The illustrations around the photographs are great for bringing attention and adding to the scene while allowing the animals to just be themselves. The colors and word art add to the fun, and keep the pace quick.

What left me wanting more: As a small thing, it would be cool to have more information about the animals and photos. There is one page of an animal with just its head showing, and we are not totally such what type of animal it is. Assuming these are zoo animals, it would also be fun to have their names for kids who want to know more.

Final verdict: SNOW DAY THE ZOO is a charming and colorful board book that shows real animals in the snow. With brief text and fun illustrations, this will work well for toddlers and young preschoolers.
