YA Review: The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire (Anna Fiteni)

About the Book:

An enchanting romantasy debut about a girl who must strike a dangerous bargain with a fae prince in order to find her missing sister, perfect for fans of Margaret Rogerson and Lexi Ryan

For Sabrina Parry, the world of her small, Welsh mining town is cruel and practical. Her main aims in life are to hold onto her job, hold her tongue, and marry off her pretty, but sickly sister Ceridwen to a man rich enough to look after her.

When Ceridwen vanishes into the woods leaving only an iron ring behind, it’s up to Sabrina to find her by venturing into Eu Gwald—fairyland.

Sabrina quickly realizes fairyland is far more dangerous than she ever expected. So when a fae prince who considers himself a scholar of all things human offers her a dangerous deal, Sabrina is forced to accept. The prince is charming, and more interested in Sabrina than she is willing to believe. But as always with fairy bargains, there is a cost.

And if this bargain doesn’t cost Sabrina her life, it will certainly cost her heart.

The only wicked lies being told here, is how little hype this book is getting!

The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire by Anna Fiteni is a YA fantasy novel that takes the cruel fae of The Cruel Prince with Welsh mythology. For Sabrina Parry, the world of her small, Welsh mining town is cruel and practical. Okay, listen listen listen. I LOVE novels with fae. Like a ton more than other mythical creatures (such as vampires, werewolves, and meremaids). And when I saw this book needed a review, I knew I had to be that person. What I LOVED the most about this book, of course is the fae and the many mystical creatures we meet throughout. Especially Neirin. But not only do we get a healthy helping of folks the forest, we get plenty of witty banter, a focus on family, and a morally gray male main character. And my favorite, a romance subplot. (It’s there, but not the main focus of the story).

What I didn’t quite like about The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire is the small fact that it’s standalone. How dare Fiteni only contain this story and characters in only one book. I need more! Immediately. Please? Though on the other hand, I am so glad it’s standalone, otherwise we would have another far quartet on our hands. Which is something I only need once in a blue moon.

Overall, The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire is a perfect book for anyone looking for something to pull them out of their Folk of the Air reading slump. As well as for anyone wanting a fae novel that doesn’t hold it’s punches with fae that are a bit more scary than Cardan Greenbriar.
