A Flicker of Hope is the tale of one girl watching the Monarch butterflies leave for the north just as her father seeks work and both will return one day. The rich illustrations give flight to the poetic words that the author uses to give the story a whimsical feel just right for discussing butterflies. The deep oranges, yellows, and black work well for the butterflies and the fact that they return during Dios De Los Muertos in November. This story celebrates the culture of the people living in this region of Mexico. This story brings dignity to the plight of the migrant farmer who must leave his family during the growing season and misses his family but must do what is necessary. The butterflies migrating and the father leaving for work set the tone for wishing, yearning, and hope that the little girl feels in her life. Overall, this was a beautiful and warm tale that brought forth an underrepresented population’s perspective.
