Joy Cowley knows what makes children laugh.
In this book full of absurd poems and very short, silly stories, a man takes his tadpoles for a walk in his hat, a cat is surprised by its talking feet, a tiger gobbles up a dentist, ten baggy clowns do a do-wacky dance . . . along with many more preposterous flights of imagination. Illustrations by David Barrow—a first-rate visual comedian—expand the humor in each fantastical suggestion. Cowley channels the spirit of classic, silly humorists such as Spike Milligan, Edward Lear, and Ogden Nash in this exuberant collection for the family that emboldens readers to experiment and play with language.

A Lot of Silly is a book full of poems and several short stories that are absurd and hilarious. There were pieces about a tiger who eats a dentist, ten dancing clowns, an alligator who works in an elevator, a magical house, and more.

What I Liked: The cover of this book was fun and silly which is what drew my eyes to it. There were a variety of poems in this book and some short stories. I appreciated the diversity in length for each of the pieces that were included and I also loved how easy they were to share with others.

What makes A Lot of Silly particularly enjoyable is the range of humor, from subtle wit to full-on ridiculousness, ensuring there's something for everyone. Whether you enjoy visual gags or quirky narratives, this book will leave you smiling long after reading.

Among my favorites is the story of a tiger who, of all things, eats a dentist. The image of such a wild twist is brilliantly absurd, and the accompanying illustrations only heighten the humor. Another standout is the tale of a man washing dishes who, in a moment of distraction, accidentally washes his cat—that will teach him to watch what he is washing. And who could forget the clever sheep who outwit their owner and trick him right out of his house? These stories, paired with playful and laugh-out-loud images, perfectly capture the essence of this collection.

Final Verdict: If you're in the mood for a dose of laughter and absurdity, A Lot of Silly delivers just that. This delightful collection of funny and absurd poetry and short stories will keep readers entertained from start to finish. The book is packed with a variety of whimsical scenarios that range from the ridiculous to the downright hilarious. This fun book of poems and short stories has something for everyone regardless of their age.
