I found this to be a delightful, slightly suspenseful read for younger children.
Alfonso is hungry, will he or won't he eat the minnows he has so sneakily lured into his mouth?
A Mouthful of Minnows is centralized around patience, friendship, and generosity. I loved how the alligator snapping turtle went against his hunger, and nature, to be kind to his breakfast.
The illustrations are adorable; they are textured/layered and really help bring this clever story to life. The story itself is really good, as well. The way the author baits the reader, pun totally intended, is fantastic and hooks little ones instantly. Children have no idea they are learning in a fun way.
The snapping turtle facts at the end are a great addition - my child is excited to check out the different turtles we encounter in the Michigan marsh lands.
