Aerie is the last book in the Magonia duology, by Maria Dahvana Headley. I have to say that this incredibly weird, but lovable series completely captured my heart. I laughed, teared up, and truly felt everything that these characters were going through.

In this second and last book, Headley really tested all of our favorite characters. From the beginning, it was obvious things would be different because of how the story ended… and certain physical changes that our main character, Aza Ray went through. However, the dynamic between her, Jason and their families were pretty much the same and I was happy with just that.

Everyone had adjusted to the changes… or so I thought. About two or three chapters in, everything just kind of went crazy. There was betrayals, mistakes, and everyone was scrambling to try and stop the unstoppable. I felt for all these characters, and was maybe a little angry at others.

———-

One thing that is difficult to get used to in this series is the confusion. I don’t know if it’s purposefully meant to be a bit confusing, or I missed certain things, but similar to the first story, I was lost at times. The truth is that this doesn’t really effect the story too much, but I kept on wishing I knew 100% of what was going on.

Final thoughts?

Maria Dahvana Headley is definitely a writer unlike any other. It’s not even that her writing style is so unique, but also the fact that she includes things that most authors don’t or won’t. There is lots of bold, CAPS, smaller text, {}, and the dialogue feels so familiar because it is so realistic. You haven’t read anything like this book or series, so if you’re looking for something that stands apart from the rest- look no further.
