After her mother’s death, eighteen-year-old Katie finds herself in a town she never thought she'd see again. Lost in turmoil and sadness, a ray of hope shines brightly when she comes face to face with Julian for the first time in years. However, he isn’t the same boy she left behind. Reserved and covered in bruises, everyone in River Valley avoids him. Rumors of his activities run rampant. Despite his cold attitude toward her and her own sadness, Katie can’t keep her thoughts from straying to her childhood friend. Julian is barely keeping it together. He’s the sole provider for his family after his dad leaves. His dreams to go to college are ruined. Even his relationship with his older brother leaves its mark. But Katie’s back in town and is stirring feelings in him he thought were lost forever. Can they find hope and love in each other, or will the struggle to survive their desperate situations prove too much?

An interesting plot with a lot of potential.

The story:
Katie has been raised by her mother and when she dies, Katie feels adrift in the world. She doesn't feel like her life can just go on as normal. All but forced to go visit her long lost father in the town she once lived in, she wants nothing more than to hole up in her house.
There's a bright side to going back to her hometown. Julian. Her neighbor and once best friend. He was her first crush and once meant the world to her. So, why doesn't he acknowledge her return to town? Damaged by the hard years since he'd seen her last, Julian can't afford to let anyone into his messed up life lest they just let him down like everyone else he loves.

What I loved:
The plot has a ton of potential. It's a great idea. Grieving girl must reconnect with people from her past in order to heal. And Julian is the perfect person to help her once he lets her in. Despite his own family issues, he's there for her and turns out to be incredibly sweet. They have an endearing chemistry.

What was just okay:
Katie had to grow on me and then once she did, she did something that showed her young age. A few scenes were also told from both points of view, giving the story a repetitive feel at times.

Final Verdict:
A heartwarming story of healing and redemption that will resonate with anyone who has felt loss and face the struggle to come back to themselves.
