The bestselling, heartwarming true story of two male penguins who create a nontraditional family that “is a must for any library” (School Library Journal, starred review) is now available in a special School & Library Edition!

At the penguin house at the Central Park Zoo, two penguins named Roy and Silo were a little bit different from the others. But their desire for a family was the same. And with the help of a kindly zookeeper, Roy and Silo get the chance to welcome a baby penguin of their very own.

This School & Library edition includes a new afterword from Eliot Schrefer, author of Queer Ducks (and Other Animals), and a special note for educators on the freedom to read from the authors.

And Tango Makes Three is a story about two penguins, Roy and Silo, at the Central Park Zoo who wanted a family but are a bit different from the other penguins. With the help of a zookeeper, Roy and Silo get the chance to have their own baby penguin.

What I Liked: I heard about this book back in 2005 when it was first published and continued to hear about Roy and Silo everywhere. I hadn’t had the chance to read it though so I was happy when I realized they were creating a library and teacher edition of the book.

I love the images that are included in this book as they add softness to the story and bring the penguins to life. I appreciate that this book shows how animals can also be a part of the LGBTQ+ community and how the community accepts them as they are. I love how this book celebrates as Roy and Silo become parents and enjoy raising their new baby penguin.

This edition of the book includes a note to educators about the freedom to read which is something that I appreciated because this book was banned and challenged in different states and cities. I also really enjoyed the new afterword that is included in this book.

Final Verdict: And Tango Makes Three is a cute real life story about penguins at the Central Park Zoo that introduces children to different types of families. This is a book that all ages can enjoy and is great to read out loud in the classroom or a library setting.
