In this bilingual, inventive, and heartfelt debut, graphic novel talent Christine Suggs explores a trip they took to Mexico to visit family, embracing and rebelling against their heritage and finding a sense of belonging.

Sixteen-year-old Christine takes their first solo trip to Mexico to spend a few weeks with their grandparents and tía. At first, Christine struggles to connect with family they don’t yet share a language with. Seeing the places their mom grew up—the school she went to, the café where she had her first date with their father—Christine becomes more and more aware of the generational differences in their family.

Soon Christine settles into life in Mexico, eating pan dulce, drawing what they see, and growing more comfortable with Spanish. But when Mom joins their trip, Christine’s two worlds collide. They feel homesick for Texas, struggle against traditions, and miss being able to speak to their mom without translating. Eventually, through exploring the impacts of colonialism in both Mexico and themselves, they find their place in their family and start to feel comfortable with their mixed identity.

What worked: I totally loved this graphic novel's tale of a teen going to Mexico to visit her family. Sixteen-year-old Christine doesn't feel she 'fits' in with her Mexican side of the family or is 'white' enough from her father's side. She's struggling with Spanish and hopes she can practice more while in Mexico.

There's so much to love about this story! It's a coming-of-age tale and one of discovering your roots while also addressing the topic of fitting in. Christine shows through engaging illustrations her trip to Mexico with the culture, food, and also language. There's mention behind the legend of Mexico City; the story behind the Virgin Guadalupe-who is my all-time favorite saint; yummy Mexico treats like conchas and pan dulce; and also a brief history of colonization.

The graphic novel format is easy to follow in this sweet and engaging tale. At the back of the novel are photos of the author's trip to her family in Mexico and of photos that inspired her story!

Mostly though this is a story of the love of family and belonging. Plus, being proud of your raices-roots. Loved this graphic novel!

Heartfelt, delightful tale of a teen's first solo trip to Mexico and of embracing yourself. Totally recommend!
