What worked: I totally loved this graphic novel's tale of a teen going to Mexico to visit her family. Sixteen-year-old Christine doesn't feel she 'fits' in with her Mexican side of the family or is 'white' enough from her father's side. She's struggling with Spanish and hopes she can practice more while in Mexico.

There's so much to love about this story! It's a coming-of-age tale and one of discovering your roots while also addressing the topic of fitting in. Christine shows through engaging illustrations her trip to Mexico with the culture, food, and also language. There's mention behind the legend of Mexico City; the story behind the Virgin Guadalupe-who is my all-time favorite saint; yummy Mexico treats like conchas and pan dulce; and also a brief history of colonization.

The graphic novel format is easy to follow in this sweet and engaging tale. At the back of the novel are photos of the author's trip to her family in Mexico and of photos that inspired her story!

Mostly though this is a story of the love of family and belonging. Plus, being proud of your raices-roots. Loved this graphic novel!

Heartfelt, delightful tale of a teen's first solo trip to Mexico and of embracing yourself. Totally recommend!
