Sidelined by a crime-fighting field trip gone wrong, Damian Wayne must refocus his attention on his life as an average student and learning how to be a team player--especially when he meets his match in his new rival, Howard.

To Damian Wayne, there is nothing more important than protecting the streets of Gotham City as Robin. But when he makes a critical mistake while out on patrol, Damian finds himself benched. And what's more, Damian's dad, Bruce Wayne--a.k.a. Batman--decides that starting over in a new school will be just the distraction Damian needs from his superhero routine.

Certain that Gotham Metro Academy has nothing to teach him, Damian is completely unprepared for the challenge he finds in Howard--the smartest and most athletic kid in school. The boys' rivalry is instantaneous and fierce...and both are sure only one of them can be the best in their class.

What follows is a funny story of rivalry, friendship, and mystery from bestselling author and illustrator Jeffrey Brown.

A new school, new friends, and a potential new villain await in Jeffrey Brown's Batman and Robin and Howard. After making a gross error on a crime-fighting mission with his dad, Damian Wayne is benched and made to focus on life as an average kid. Disappointed and anxious to get back on the streets, Damian is less than open to the idea of a new school and new people. Then enters Howard. Howard is a sweet kid, the one that is friends with everyone, makes good grades, and is just generally a good guy at Damian's new school. On his first day, Howard wants to make him feel welcome, but things couldn't go more wrong, and a rivalry between the two boys develops.

I love Brown's writing style. He engages the reader with the character's thoughts and explores real life problems with iconic characters like Batman and Robin. In this one, Damian is starting a new school, at odds with his dad, and all the other ups and downs that come with being a middle schooler. It was interesting to see Damian in the role of the new kid, not fitting in and trying to find a place at the school.

I really enjoyed Howard's perspective in the story. It adds to the dynamic. He doesn't know who Damian really is beyond a "spoiled rich kid," yet he tried to reach out to him. Yes, a rivalry develops. This has more to do with Howard's insecurity as all his friends, even the teacher, seem to be more interested in Damian than him. There is jealousy at play, but I like how the author handles it showing both sides of the story and how the two boys misunderstand each other from their first meeting on.

Alfred's and Batman's roles are smaller than the boys, but I love how Brown incorporates them into the story. Damian's description of Alfred is sweet, the boy clearly thinks of him as family, not "the help." Alfred steps into the role most readers recognize as the iconic paternal figure for the Wayne family.

Final Thought: Batman and Robin and Howard is a light-hearted and fun read that will teach readers to empathize with their peers, putting themselves in others' shoes before passing judgment, and maybe encourage them to make a friend or two along the way.
