Bird feels a flutter of jealousy when Bear is unduly entertained by the jocular Mole in Jarvis’s third set of stories about the endearing pair.

Usually, a new wonky stick for Bird’s collection would be exciting, but . . . not today. “Hmm,” said Bear. “Well, in that case, I think it’s time for . . . The Dance.”

Bear and Bird are the best of friends. They don’t always understand each other, but both agree that all they want is to make the other happy. So when Bird is under the weather, Bear arrives with a backpack of goodies and his best rendition of The Dance to try to make her feel better. And when Bear and Bird hang out with Mole—who tells hilarious jokes!—Bird eventually realizes that she doesn’t need to compete for Bear’s attention, since there’s plenty of laughter to go around. Whether it’s a comedy of errors around a Do Not Go in the Hole sign or the discovery that doing nothing together is the true badge of friendship, Jarvis tempers the mix-ups and misunderstandings with a genuine warmth and affection in this quartet of stories starring a most charming pair.

BEAR AND BIRD: THE ADVENTURE AND OTHER STORIES is a charming early chapter book. The book is divided into four chapters or stories with each featuring Bear and Bird, who are the best of friends. They figure out how to take care of each other when they are not feeling well, go exploring and find a hole, experience jealousy with a new friend, and find adventure on the lake.

What I loved: These are sweet stories about friendship and feelings that young readers can relate to. The book includes lots of illustrations and colors, which adds to the interest for children who are growing independently into chapter books. The font is also very large and clear, which helps with reading. Repetitive words and simple sentences are also great for readers taking these early steps.

The characters are lots of fun with their own personalities and plenty of emotions conveyed through the stories and images. These are stories that will entertain the early elementary school audience as they begin to read independently (or as a book shared with a caregiver). Due to the simple and sweet nature of the stories, these will work well for preschoolers and up.

Final verdict: BEAR AND BIRD: THE ADVENTURE AND OTHER STORIES is a charming early chapter book that speaks to friendship and fun and will work well for young independent readers.
