Reader reviewed by Lisa Yamashita

If they had a 'Decathalon of Poetry,' then surely BEFORE THE CITY by poet Kirby Wright would be receiving either the Bronze, Silver, or Gold.

In these pages you will find prose poetry, poetry in couplets & tercets & quatraines, narrative poetry, confessional poetry, surreal poetry, poetry of place, etc.  Most are guided by a strong first person voice that is both introspective and atmospheric.  Since young poets should experiment with writing to find their voices, this is the perfect primer to read.  It won the 2003 San Diego Book Award for Poetry and most of the poems have been published in college literary magazines, such as the Santa Clara Review, Artful Dodge, and Blue Mesa Review.
