Big and Little, an elephant and a mouse, are best friends. But their friendship isn't based on common interests. Big and Little like opposite things, and author/illustrator Michael Garland has created a nice take on a much-done concept. There are the typical up/down and fast/slow comparisons, but as Big cooks spinach from a recipe in his VERY VEGGIE COOKBOOK, Little is carrying a cake that he just baked. Opportunities arise for new vocabulary words too, as Big is timid and Little is bold. The ending of the book drives home the fact that even if friends don't like the same things, and even though they may fight from time to time, differences are okay and opposites can hang out together.
My thanks to the publisher and YA Books Central for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
