Blubber is a good name for her, the note from Caroline said about Linda. Jill crumpled it up and left it on the corner of her school desk. She didn't want to think about Linda or her dumb report on the whale just then. Jill wanted to think about Halloween. But Robby grabbed the note and before Linda stopped talking it had gone halfway around the room.

That's where it all started...there was something about Linda that made a lot of kids in her fifth-grade class want to see how far they could go...but nobody, Jill least of all, expected the fun to end where it did.

If you've ever been the brunt of a joke or even the person who does the teasing, you can appreciate this book. Although it was published back in the 1970s, the content is still fresh.

Jill Brenner is a fifth grader who goes along with teasing a fellow classmate who happens to be rather large. But Jill stands up for "Blubber" (a.k.a. Linda) and then suddenly finds herself on the receiving end of the attacks. Kids, they say, can be cruel and this book shows a little of the story from both sides and some ways to deal with it.

The best part of the book is that it is honest. In real life, the people who do the teasing don't always get their "comeuppance." Wendy, the ringleader of the teasers, never finds out what it feels like to be on the receiving end of the joke. Life isn't perfect. Sometimes the good guys finish last and sometimes they finish first. And sometimes, they realize that it doesn't matter where you "finish."

In one way or another, we have all been there. After all, none of us is perfect. Judy Blume helps us to realize that we don't have to be. She continues this theme in many of her other books, such as Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret, and Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great. You know you're growing up when you learn to accept yourself for who you are, and not how other people see you (or how you think they see you).

Younger kids will enjoy this book, but parents should consider reading it as well if their child is on either the giving or receiving end of schoolroom teasing. It can serve to remind them of what it really is like back in the fifth grade.

The book Blubber by Judy Blume was a funny and entertaining novel. The main character, Jill Brenner, finds herself thinking about Halloween while shy Linda Fischer presents a project about whales and their blubber. Jill decides to shock everyone with her Halloween costume inspired by Linda's presentation. Jill and her friends, Caroline and Wendy, call Linda malicious names, including Blubber. Word spreads around of Linda's new nickname, and Jill tries to defend Linda when the bullying goes too far. She then learns her lesson about bullying as she finds herself in a similar situation. While this book is banned for evil behavior and inappropriate language, it should be read by all fifth graders and those at that reading level with the mindset that this book is teaching them lessons of how not to treat others.

Well, i guess this book was okay, since it talked about how kids get teased and stuff and then when the teasers friends tease the teaser the teaser gets revenge on her by not being their friends and becoming friends with the teased in order to make the friend look sad and then the teaser's other friend gets mad cuz the teaser starts hanging out a lot with the teased an the teaser's old friends points that out leaing the teaser with no friends. There is a reason I made that confusing, so I wont spoil the book. Have fun!

its about this girl who looks different from all the other girls in her fifth grade class because she's very tall and already wears a bra. she is made fun of and picked on. then she makes a friend.

this was a ok book but i guess it could have been better for what it's worth, id recommend it to female 5graders

When I read this book, I in third grade. The whole time I was thinking to myself "OH MY GOSH!! SHE SAID THE D-WORD!" Since I was only eight, I couldn't believe that books had swear words in it. I don't remember much about the book, because of how long ago I read it, but I just remember the swearing lol
