The book Blubber by Judy Blume was a funny and entertaining novel. The main character, Jill Brenner, finds herself thinking about Halloween while shy Linda Fischer presents a project about whales and their blubber. Jill decides to shock everyone with her Halloween costume inspired by Linda's presentation. Jill and her friends, Caroline and Wendy, call Linda malicious names, including Blubber. Word spreads around of Linda's new nickname, and Jill tries to defend Linda when the bullying goes too far. She then learns her lesson about bullying as she finds herself in a similar situation. While this book is banned for evil behavior and inappropriate language, it should be read by all fifth graders and those at that reading level with the mindset that this book is teaching them lessons of how not to treat others.
