Lina Mayfleet always knew there most be more to the world that is outside the stone walls of the city of Ember. Lamp posts and light bolbs keep the city alight. But now, the city is running short on light bolbs and are starting to has blackouts. The record: 7.5 minutes. And each time there is one, all the people living in Ember stand still and wonder: What if the lights never come back on?

Doon Harrow was a serious boy. He was determinated to help Ember in it's time of need. He starts to explore the underground of Ember and notices strange things...

When Lina finds a piece of damaged paper, she comes to Doon for help. Could this possibly be the instructions to the get to the world outside Ember?

This book was to most exciting book I've read in awhile, maybe ever. It was fast-moving and kept me intrigued. If you borrow this book from your library, make sure that you also borrow the sequel. 'Cause when you read the cliff-hanger ending to the first book, you will want to start the second one immediately.

The fourth and final book in the books of Ember series will be published in October, the movie also is coming out in October.

I am impressed by Jeanne DuPrau's creative story lines and that Random House has published this book.
