BORN AT DAWN is an upper YA fantasy full of adventure - the main character is half human and half Da’Valian–a magical race–and she hides what she is behind a glamor. We’re introduced to her as an established thief and daughter of a tavern owner, but when Da’Valian’s show up at the tavern, her life changes forever.
So much action is packed into this novel! It really put me in the mindset of Sarah J. Maas, and Elly Blake [Frostblood Saga,] with its deep character development and world-building. Sometimes it was a touch confusing and difficult to follow with such similar names, but that was me.
I really enjoyed the premise of the story, although not a unique one, it’s one I really like in this genre. A thief/nobody trying to make it in the harsh world they live in, only to discover they’re an important figure and needed in their new life/situation. Coupled with the stuffy/strict romantic interest... It’s really a great recipe as far as plots go.
As stated above, I think fans of Throne of Glass, Frostblood, and Wicked Saints would enjoy this, as it has a similar feel with romance, elements of a deity gifting abilities, and magic.
