Caged is a tribute to all the children whose families had to flee from war and refugee camps is the only cage they have ever known. This powerful historical fiction is fueled by the author’s own lived experience as a refugee from Laos in reaction to seeing the children from South America being kept in cages by the US government in recent years. The target age range for this book is 4-8 years and is written in a way that caters to that age group, however, given the topic older children may be more impacted by reading it and understand it better. Told with a sense of innocence and a surging sense of hope for a better future, this book is a lovely tribute and frames the plight of refugees in a way that may help garner more empathy. Overall, unless a young reader is already being impacted by this topic it is likely better suited to slightly older children.
