What a change from book one! While I enjoyed Timekeeper, it took me a while to truly engage the story. Chainbreaker quickly diminished any quarries I had with the pacing from the first novel. This story was so successful in drawing me in and truly capturing my attention. It started off with a huge event sending the characters we met in book one to India to inspect their clock towers. The three different points of views were vastly different from the first book but a necessary addition. Since Danny, Daphne, and Colton were in different places in the book we needed these multiple perspectives. I was never lost through the novel on which character I was following or where they were supposed to be. The plot was more interesting this time as everything we thought in the first novel changed. I really enjoyed the “dreams” Colton had as it introduced a new concept for the clock spirits. This was a huge success for the trilogy leading to great expectations for Firestarter, book three.
In this book, we were able to explore the characters a lot more. Danny and Colton’s relationship being a big part of that. Since Danny was stationed in Enfield, he had the means to be with Colton. I really enjoy them being together and reading about their developmental relationship. While, I loved Danny in the first book, Colton really stood out to me. We were able to read from his point of view and explore his actual thought. A great addition to the story. The dreams that Colton had were so opening. Finding out the real story of the clock spirits definitely moved this book in a different direction. Along with a new point of view from Colton, we were able to read about Daphne. I really enjoyed her character in Timekeeper, and I am so happy we got more of her in this book. She was an outstanding character that truly brought more to this novel than I was expecting. I am excited to read the rest of their journey in the next installment.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Chainbreaker by Tara Sim was a huge success. This sequel surpassed the first book in multiple ways. A way more interesting and engaging plot really drove the pacing in this book. The introduction of new point of views, giving us more Colton and Daphne, was a huge benefit. These new perspectives really gave the story more depth than we received in Timekeeper. I highly recommend this book if you enjoyed the first one, and if you were having doubts about starting the series, definitely pick it up.
