On her eighteenth birthday, Princess Evelayn of Eadrolan, the Light Kingdom, can finally access the full range of her magical powers. The light looks brighter, the air is sharper, and the energy she can draw when fighting feels almost limitless.

But while her mother, the queen, remains busy at the war front, in the Dark Kingdom of Dorjhalon, the corrupt king is plotting. King Bain wants control of both kingdoms, and his plan will fling Evelayn into the throne much sooner than she expected.

In order to defeat Bain and his sons, Evelayn will quickly have to come into her ability to shapeshift, and rely on the alluring Lord Tanvir. But not everyone is what they seem, and the balance between the Light and Dark comes at a steep price.

In the first book of a remarkable duology, Sara B. Larson sets the stage for her reimagining of Swan Lake -- a lush romance packed with betrayal, intrigue, magic, and adventure.

In DARK BREAKS THE DAWN, Evelayn is the future queen of the Light Kingdom. As expected, she must prepare for her role and train to protect herself with her magic and without it. King Bain of the Dark Kingdom wants to destroy the Light Kingdom, so Evelayn must always be prepared. One must not let their guard down during times of war.

While training, she meets Lord Tanvir and discovers that he's one of few people who can make her smile authentically. He's patient, kind, and supportive of Evelayn's role in the grand scheme of things. But when Evelayn's faced with the challenge of defeating King Bain, will her newly acquired light magic be enough?

DARK BREAKS THE DAWN is a retelling of Swan Lake and the author's writing is so alluring and beautiful. I love how Evelayn is cautious of everyone and puts the safety of her kingdom first. The ending was a little bit surprising and has me eager to start the second. I love how the swans played a big part in the story, but I have a feeling the second one will have more Swan Lake elements than this one did.

Final Verdict: DARK BREAKS THE DAWN is full of betrayal, magic, action, and a blooming romance. I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it to fans of fairytale retellings, Swan Lake, and fantasy.
