In Dinosaur Pie, Rory, a boy with ADHD, has just transformed into a dinosaur after eating dino pie from Buymart. Rory is not enjoying his time as a dinosaur, as he can’t use the toilet, can’t play video games, and can only eat sausages. He finally convinces his friends to take this dilemma seriously and they get started on Operation Make Rory Human Again.
What I Liked: This book opens with Rory who has trouble in school and is enjoying new updates in the game he plays with his friend. Things seem pretty normal until his mom brings him a treat from the store which is a dinosaur pie, Rory seems a bit suspicious as to what he really is eating but enjoys it anyway assuming his mom might’ve read the label wrong. It isn’t until he wakes up as a dinosaur that they return to the label and find that something may be going on at the Buymart.
The beginning of the book allows you to learn a little about Rory and his friends which adds to the story as you care for how this ends. The best part is that you won’t guess the cure for this ailment until the solution is right in front of you.
The illustrations throughout this book break the book up in a way that makes it easier for younger children to read. The images help to tell the story and add some light-heartedness to this book. This book is great for early readers as the font is larger, and each chapter consists of a few pages.
Each of the characters that you are introduced to throughout this book is unique in their interests and personality. It is easy to differentiate the characters as they also have various ways of speaking, for example, Oleg talks in the third person most of the time and speaks as if he is recording videos.
Final Verdict: Dinosaur Pie is a silly and sweet book about what happens when labels aren’t read beforehand and the power of coming together to solve problems. Children ages 6 and up will laugh at the antics that Rory gets into as a dinosaur and marvel at the solution to this dilemma he is in.
