Dog Rules is a story about a two dogs who end up raising a bird. However, what makes this story was fun was that the bird was expected to act as a dog! It made for a great read, along with the beautiful colors that really helped bring the story alive for the kids.
Despite the bird not acting how it was “supposed” to in the beginning, it was still very lovable and cute. And it brought lots of humor into this one!
What I think that children can take from this, and what the children I work with took from it is: family is family despite every and all differences. The bird looks nothing like its parents, and yet it is shown so much love and kindness. And in return, the bird loves his parents back just as greatly.
It was really a funny story, overall, but sweet when you look closer at the subtle messages throughout it. Definitely a good one for kids who are dog lovers, or just animal lovers in general. It was a very enjoyable and interactive read that brought my kids lots and lots of laughter!
