Egg is a graphic novel for preschoolers about four eggs, one big surprise, and an unlikely friendship, by Caldecott Medalist and New York Times—bestselling author Kevin Henkes. Egg is not only a perfect Easter gift, but also a classic read-alone and read-aloud that will appeal all year long.

This masterful and stylistically original picture book introduces young children to four eggs. One is blue, one is pink, one is yellow, and one is green. Three of the eggs hatch, revealing three baby birds who fly away. But the green egg does not hatch. Why not? When the three birds return to investigate, they’re in for a big surprise! What will happen next? With a compelling mix of comic-like panels, wordless pages and spreads, and a short text featuring word repetition, surprise, and suspense, Egg is an ideal book for emergent readers, as well as for sharing in a group. Egg is sure to inspire creativity and storytelling in preschoolers, as they anticipate the page turns and determine their own endings! Kevin Henkes is the bestselling author of Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, Waiting, and Kitten’s First Full Moon, among many other beloved titles.

EGG is a cute and simple board book that primarily focuses on the illustrations. The story begins with four eggs, each of a different color- pink, yellow, blue, and green. The pink, yellow, and blue eggs hatch and birds come out. The green egg remains. The birds return to listen and then peck-peck-peck on the green egg. Soon, it also hatches, and an alligator arrives. The birds are surprised and fly away. The alligator is alone, sad, and lonely. The birds soon return and are friends with the alligator.

Told in several multipanel pages with simple colors and designs, this book is ideal for the youngest of readers. There are very few words in the book and many are repeated. The story primarily happens in the images. In terms of the images themselves, they are simple but lovely and convey the overall message very well.

What I loved: This simple book turns pages quickly and appeals to the youngest readers who will enjoy the brevity of words and modest images. The story is a sweet one of animals who were eggs together and grow up to be friends. The repetitiveness of the words within the book also appeals to older infants and young toddlers, who will enjoy the overall simplicity. With some extra context of emotions (sad/lonely to friends/happy), this is a great book for young learners.

Final verdict: This minimalistic book is perfect for the youngest readers who turn pages quickly and love looking at pictures. The overall story is adorable and easy to follow, making it a quick and delightful read for parents to share with their little ones. I would recommend for older infants and very young toddlers who are just beginning to get into books.

EGG a story about four eggs waiting to hatch and three do. But the fourth is left waiting and waiting. The three birds come back to find the last egg still hasn’t hatched. They decide to sit with it, then they begin to peck at it, in the hopes that it will finally hatch. When it does the birds are in for a BIG surprise. Because the last egg is not what they thought it would be. What follows is a story about unlikely friendship.

There isn’t much of a story to EGG, but it is still quite a beautiful book. The soft pastel colors and the simplicity of this book makes this perfect for young children and beginning readers. Kevin Henkes really delivers a delightful book about four eggs. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is something I think everyone will love. Overall I loved this book. It was beautiful and surprising and it brought a smile to my face. Definitely pick this one up, it is worth it.
