Katora Kase is next in line to take over as guardian to a secret and powerful healing Elixir. Now she must journey into the wilds of Faway Forest to find the ingredient that gives the Elixir its potency. Even though she has her sister and brother, an old family friend, and the handsome son of a mapmaker as companions, she feels alone. It is her decision alone whether or not to bind herself to the Elixir to serve and protect it until it chooses a new guardian. The forest hosts many dangers, including wicked beings that will stop at nothing to gain power, but the biggest danger Katora may face is whether or not to open up her heart to love.

This book hooked me right from the start. Its fast pace and well written plot lines drew me in. Elixir Bound, while set in a fantasy world, is still easy for readers to understand- you feel like you are right there with the characters. The world building is so detailed it is easy to find yourself lost in the setting (in a good way). Katora, the female protagonist, is a strong independent girl, who values family and does not weigh her decisions lightly. She is both strong yet able to ask questions and have doubts. The best part of the story are the characters. The characters, especially Katora, are not always brave have flaws- like real people. It is refreshing to see such realistic portrayals of characters in a fantasy book.

Katie L. Carroll uses vivid language and creates a fantastic journey through Faway Forest. Her descriptions of the creatures help set this story a part from others in the genre. There is a little something for everyone; drama, romance, action, adventure, suspense, and mystery thrown in for good.

Fans of Fantasy and Adventure should pick up Elixir Bound. I am looking forward to reading more my Katie L. Carroll.
