Sun and Grass, Water and Tree, Fire and Rain—nature’s cycle of creation unfolds in a compelling lyrical text and striking illustrations.

Sun grows beams
and Grass grows blades
and Cloud cannot contain herself.

Spring rains change Water from a tumbling creek to a roaring river and bring Tree nutrients it needs to stretch toward the sky. As Sun’s rays intensify, the sprouts and fruits and insects of the forest grow and bloom and develop, all working together in harmony. Even Fire, whose work causes Tree to ache from the inside, brings opportunity for the next generation of flora and fauna. Paired with the vivid, organic imagery of Dominique Ramsey, Liz Garton Scanlon’s poetic tribute to our planet’s resilience is a resonant story of life, death, and regeneration.

Everyone Starts Small is a beautifully illustrated story for the very young about the concept of an ecosystem. Told through poetic phrases and easy-to-understand word choices, young readers can see how everything starts small and then grows. Nature is personified, which does a nice job of making plants relatable and emphasizing the point that they are alive too. We watch the plants grow and then get devasted by wildfire only to have the rain come and calm everything down. After a period of rest, everything grows anew. Through this cyclic concept, readers can start to understand the interconnectedness of all things in an ecosystem and how nature wants to recover and be alive. Overall, this is a lovely introduction to the concept of ecosystems for the young reader and does a great job of inspiring awe.

Everyone Starts Small is a celebration of earth, natural cycles, growth, and the special qualities of trees, wind, seeds, and water.

Liz Garton Scanlon has written beautiful poetry that perfectly describes the interconnectedness of absolutely everyone and everything in nature.

The digitally rendered illustrations are undulated with color and shape that are stylized and pair spectacularly with Scanlon's words.
