Everyone Starts Small is a beautifully illustrated story for the very young about the concept of an ecosystem. Told through poetic phrases and easy-to-understand word choices, young readers can see how everything starts small and then grows. Nature is personified, which does a nice job of making plants relatable and emphasizing the point that they are alive too. We watch the plants grow and then get devasted by wildfire only to have the rain come and calm everything down. After a period of rest, everything grows anew. Through this cyclic concept, readers can start to understand the interconnectedness of all things in an ecosystem and how nature wants to recover and be alive. Overall, this is a lovely introduction to the concept of ecosystems for the young reader and does a great job of inspiring awe.
