Paula Stokes returns to the world of Vicarious in this sequel, a high-action psychological thriller with a protagonist out for vengeance. When Winter Kim finds out that her sister is dead and that she has a brother she never knew about, only two things matter—finding what’s left of her family and killing the man who destroyed her life. Her mission leads her from St. Louis to Los Angeles back to South Korea, where she grew up. Things get increasingly dangerous once Winter arrives in Seoul. Aided by her friends Jesse and Sebastian, Winter attempts to infiltrate an international corporation to get close to her target, a nefarious businessman named Kyung. But keeping her last remaining loved ones out of the line of fire proves difficult, and when all seems to be lost, Winter must face one last devastating decision: is revenge worth sacrificing everything for? Or can she find a spark of hope in the darkness that threatens to engulf her?

*WARNING: There are no spoilers for FEROCIOUS, but there are spoilers for book 1, VICARIOUS*
As a reader, sequels always make me nervous. Most of us have heard of second book syndrome (though that is usually applied to trilogies instead of duologies), but for me, if I've LOVED the first book, as I did VICARIOUS, any follow up makes me worry that it won't match the love I had for book 1. Thankfully, FEROCIOUS is just as good and strong as book 1, and I loved every bit of it.

FEROCIOUS begins right where book 1 left off with Winter reeling from the events that happened and making her way to LA to meet (and save) the person who is supposedly her brother. Through a series of intense events, Winter must travel to Seoul, accompanied by Jessie and Baz, to confront the horrors of her past and the threats to her future. I adore Winter's character development so much. With all she's experienced, she's handling everything as best she can, but eventually she has to decide if she wants to get better internally, even if that means choosing a different path. Stokes does an exceptional job of balancing the emotional hardship alongside the high action, maintaining a pace that keeps the pages turning quickly but never feeling like the characters are being skimmed over for plot.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the Winter and Jessie ship in the first book, but I fell hard for them in this one. While they do have their share of angst (and rightly so), they also have so many sweet, quiet moments together, the kind that comes from a very deep bond, romantic or otherwise. I love the ragtag group the two of them and Baz make.

While this may or may not be important or relevant to the general reader, I personally love how Stokes incorporates therapy in both books. Winter struggles navigating her DID (especially since having it at all is a fairly new realization for her), and she consistently thinks about her therapist and seeking help, even if its a minor mention. Several of Stokes's books mention therapy in some form, and it's wonderful seeing how different characters in different books react to their therapy and what kind of help they want from it. In every situation, therapy is portrayed 100% positively, even if some characters decide therapy is or is not for them personally. It is always shown as a healthy, legitimate option, and I appreciate that so much. *end soapbox*

Once again demonstrating her talent across multiple genres, Paula Stokes delivers a heart-stopping, action-packed, romantic, and adventurous thriller duology in VICARIOUS and FEROCIOUS. Readers who fell hard for book 1 won't be disappointed in this powerful sequel.
