Jude Gallagher expected the summer before her senior year to be no different than all her other summers. As always, she’ll get a little sunburned at the country club pool, gorge on too much pizza and too many movies with her gang of close friends, and work really hard at keeping Kane O’Reilly’s flirtations at bay. But honestly, holding him off is becoming increasingly difficult. Despite the fact that Kane is one of her best friends dating clear back to kindergarten, she can’t help noticing how absolutely gorgeous he’s become. And charming. And sweet, too. He’s definitely not the same, little boy from her childhood days, and she’s reminded of this every single time he flashes those twin dimples her way. But… he’s Kane, and he’s one of her best friends. She can’t go there.

To top off the craziness, Jude's beyond eccentric friend, Frankie Melmack, announces the subject of their summer scholarship project: to prove the existence of an obscure mythical race. Jude is skeptical. But soon, she and Frankie dive into the world of the Vatra u Krvi, a people created with Phoenix blood. Jude is skeptical at first, and even tries to convince Frankie of how risky this fantasy science fair project really is. And when a spontaneous camping trip in the name of research goes awry, she’s certain of it.

But as she’s carried deeper into the strange world of the Vatra u Krvi, aka the Firebloods, Jude uncovers a world like nothing she’s seen before. Without intending to, she slowly begins to unravel a truth that exposes a deep, forbidden secret buried right in her own hometown. And as heat surges across the Nevada desert Jude realizes just how unordinary her summer is going to be. And Kane O’Reilly? He’s at the very center of it all.

What happens when myth becomes a reality that is closer to home than you realize? That is the tale of Firebloods. In some ways it felt like a tale told around a campfire on a Native American Reservation. I was absolutely hooked on the sorry almost immediately, and couldn't wait to finish it. I read the book within 2 or 3 days at most. I highly recommend this book if you like any type of legends or myths, it won't disappoint you.

I love the characters and their interactions. Not just a lot of action, but a true, indepth story.
Good Points

I have loved every book that I have read by Ms. Hays and this one does not disappoint!

Jude Gallagher's father died under mysterious circumstances and her mother is basically MIA in her grief. The only thing that keeps Jude going are her friends, especially Kane. When her friend, Frankie, suggests that she and Jude do a project on the mysterious Firebloods, Jude is skeptical. Little does she know how this whole project will affect her life.

Great characters and great story with lots of unexpected twists. The idea of the Phoenix and Firebloods is an intriguing one and I plan to read more about the whole mythos. I look forward to reading the next book in the series because this one ended on a hugely unexpected note!

Well done, Ms. Hays!

What can I say? I, a 49 year old woman, got sucked into a YA story and absolutely LOVE it! The characters come to life, the story is amazing, not slow, not fast, JUST RIGHT Goldilocks! :D

Fantastic new series! Wonderful story!
Good Points
Fantastic to see a YA story (or any book, for that matter) where the characters actually discuss things and talk to each other.

Definitely a good book for values.
