Firelight (Firelight #1)

Draki is like this internal dragon which "manifest" to show its true colors. The human body changes to become dragonlike. Or an actual dragon. It's sort of weird, but you'll understand it by the second book. Hopefully.

Jace is the narrator of Firelight. She is cherished by the Pride. (A group of draki also like Jacinda.) She is sometimes reckless, but she has a good heart. She is brave and smart in times of great danger. She knows how to fight and has trouble when she really needs to back down instead of fighting the enemies. She is going to be bonded to Cassian, who is kind of like the prince of the Pride. Jace is also a firebreather, a rare type of draki. Very rare and hasn't happen in generations.

Will is the love interest. He is associated with the opponents, Jace's enemies. His family, hunters of draki like Jace, may had something to do with Jace's father. Will, as said by other girl characters, is cute and an outcast. Unlike his cousins, Xander and I-can't-remember-the-other-one-but-he-is-as-mean-as-Xander-and-a-freaking-hunter-of-draki, Will is much nicer and has a thick shell to protect anyone from getting close to his heart. He doesn't want anyone to get hurt because of him.

Side Note: I wish this book has revolving POVs. I have a good feeling that everything would be much different.

Anyway, this is a good book. I felt that it was rather interesting to read about Sophie Jordan's imagination.

The writing was pretty good and smooth. No changes needed.

The ending killed me. It killed me. I mean, after all this time, THIS HAS TO BE THE ENDING!!! Are you kidding me? WHY!?! JUST WHY IS IT LIKE THIS!?!

From the moment I saw Firelight on a Waiting on Wednesday post, I knew I had to read it. The cover caught my eye, the synopsis intrigued me, and Sophie Jordan is truly one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to meet on Twitter! All of this contributed me jumping onto an ARC tour as fast as I possibly could. Wait until September to read this? Pshaw. As if I really could.

As I opened the book and dove into Jacinda's world, the world of the Draki, I found myself becoming increasingly enamored with both her and the abilities she possessed. Jacinda had a fiery attitude to match her special talent, and I loved her spunk! Her disgust with the situation being forced upon her, her utter rebelliousness, I just drank it in page after page. What struck me most was her absolute love for her mother and her sister. Jacinda was willing to give up so much to make her family content. If only we could all aspire to be as loving as she was.

To be honest though, my one gripe with Jacinda was her inability to do what she wanted to do. I understood how much she loved her family, and why she chose not to put them at risk. However as the book progressed I began to get angry at how much she would complain and yet not follow through with her plans. It didn't seem to match the fiery attitude that boiled within her. It bothered me for a long time, but then I was saved. I'll be honest without spoilers, the ending did change my mind! Thus why this was a fleeting issue and Jacinda and I are once again on the same page. Rock on girlfriend!

The chemistry that was present between Jacinda and Will reminded me a lot of Grace and Sam in Shiver and that really struck a cord with me. It was the type of attraction that although it is very sudden, is strong enough that it doesn't really need to be explained. The characters mesh together so well once they find one another that you never have to question why they are destined for love. Although the reader doesn't really get a deep look into Will's past, it is enough that he is there for Jacinda when she needs him. There without judging. I can only hope that more of Will's mysterious nature will be revealed in the next book!

Firelight was such a quick paced and expertly written book that I powered through it in a matter of hours. It was the type of book that when I came to the end I was saddened. No more story? I had to remind myself that there will be another one soon and I can once again jump on board with Jacinda and her unlikely match. I'm already so excited for the next book! Thank you, Sophie Jordan, for making me fall in love with dragons all over again.

Sophie Jordan wrote romance novels before foraying into teen paranormal romance for Firelight. There are some definite hints of this in the writing, not too overt and not worse than what happens in a lot of the teen books that are more about romance than anything else. It would not have bothered me at all, had I not had high hopes for the plot of this one. The premise is really great; how cool is the idea of people being able to turn into dragons!

There was one issue I had with the whole turning into a dragon thing though. Jacinda likes Will (Mr. Studly) partially for his ability to awaken her draki. (spoiler of obvious bit of plot point coming) Once Will has found out what she is, she no longer worries about shifting partway while they are making out, even though her face changes when that happens. Umm, what? Besides, do dragons even have lips? Or hands? The hands thing made me wonder too. At the end of the book, she brushes Will's face with her hand while dragon-ed out. That just does not fit my understanding of what a dragon would look like.

The relationship between Will and Jacinda is every bit the typical teen romance of melodrama-filled waffling between "I will love him forevers!" and "I can't be with him, because it's too dangerous!" Needless to say, that gets old, nor does it signal love to my brain. Unfortunately, the focus of the book (romance author) was on Will and Jacinda's relationship, not the cool fantasy story framing it. They make out a lot. And though her breasts don't heave, she does have intense physical reactions every time (dragon awakening).

I give this a resounding meh! It could have been good without the cookie cutter characters and the CW style romance, but as it is it's barely merits attention. Nevertheless, Twilight fans will likely adore it and the inevitable sequels.

Jacinda Jones is a draki a fire-breathing draki, the first in the pride in over four hundred years. Jacinda rare talent makes her the most prized possession of her pride. Draki's ability to shape shift into human form is one of the few things that keeps the them safe from Hunters. One day when Jacinda breaks the rules and flies during daylight hours she almost gets captured by a group of hunters. But Will saves her life by not revealing her hiding place to the hunters.This leads to her mother deciding it is best for her family flee their home. Her mother thinks it would be safer if Jacinda’s inner Draki dies off like hers did so she chooses to move them to Chaparral a desert area where Draki can’t survive. Jacinda doesn't want to loose the Draki part of herself so she fights against it. And then when she starts school she meets Will the boy who saved her life, but he doesn’t recognize her human form. And what make it even better whenever she is around him he revives her Draki. So Jacinda has to be very careful about keeping her Draki alive and not exposing herself to a clan of Hunters.


I have never read a book about dragons before and I really enjoyed it a lot. I really liked the predator and pray concept of the book and the chemistry between Will and Jacinda. Tamara I just didn't really like her she seemed to only think about herself and what she wanted but I kind of felt sorry for her because of the way the pride treated her. I liked the mom but I didn't like that she wanted Jacinda's Draki to die so she could be "normal". This book was amazing and I'm dying to know what happens next!

To be frank, I wasn't so keen on this book at first. After all, I hate tragedies, and doomed love seems to say it all. But wait! Will & Jacinda's romance is far from heart-wrenching & teary--

It's simply breathtaking!

How ancient creatures cross paths with modern day high school; how Will (draki hunter) falls in love with the girl whom he had once saved in draki form; how the draki clan heir keeps his eyes on our heroine...

Need I spell it out?

This is a must-read!

I heart Will! He is no tortured Edward Cullen, who goes "I am attracted to you-I'm dangerous-stay away-it's for your own good". Instead, Will fights to be with Jacinda in front of the whole school, finally stealing her heart and mine!

Ooh, but what about the heir to the draki clan. Fear not, there is no love triangle. The book keeps its momentum and appeal simply with Will and Jacinda, a couple exploring the boundaries of their heritage.

Sophie Jordan does not let us off lightly though, she keeps us leaning forward on our seats by ending the novel with a cliffhanger. Jacinda is forced to flee into the mortal world when she breaks her clan's most sacred tenet, and now, she has gone against her clan's most sacred vows again, by turning into a draki right in front of Will's family. NOTE: they are draki hunters.

Inevitably, she has to leave her new life outside of the clan and go back to where she came from.

And, yes, the book ends here, which is really cruel! What of Will and Jacinda? Don't worry, the sequel is out. Look out for Vanish.

This book from Sophie Jordan was just amazing. I couldn't get it out of my mind. It moved me. But the ending tore my heart apart.


Characters : My favorite character of all would be Will. Charming, nice Will. He was perfect for Jacinda. I couldn't wait for him to know about Jacinda's secret.


Then, there would be Jacinda. Draki Jacinda. I loved that she needed to decide big things.


Cassian was quite nice. I don't know if he was lying about him loving Jacinda and that he wouldn't let them clip he wings.


Tamra was jealous of Jacinda which was what the book needed.


All the other characters were okay... I guess. I didn't hate any character.

I really wanted to love this book. The premise totally does it for me. Shapeshifting dragons, starcrossed romance, and epic choices.

Unfortunately I didn't connect with the main character and wanted more from the plot than I was given. While I felt Jandica's struggles were authentic, I didn't feel the book lived up to ts potential. I would have loved to see more plot, rather than romance back and forth, and more dragon culture (which sounded fascinating).

While this book wasn't for me, readers who enjoy more romance-focused plots will no doubt love it.

I really wanted to love this book. The premise is fantastic and it opens with an exciting action scene and an instant mystery. I really liked the dragon culture, and the fact that Jacinda has such a struggle, not just within herself but with her family. I didn't enjoy the constant telling instead of showing me with action and dialogue. Also, the author often repeated things I already knew. And Jacinda often contradicted herself in her thoughts. I sometimes felt like I was on a see-saw. However, Will is super intriguing, and I really wanted to know more about his family secrets! The author does a good job of building suspense, and I'm hopeful that the sequel will be more action-oriented and less chunks of exposition. Even though the writing style wasn't for me, the story is really good, and I think there will be many fans of this book.

So I have read a Ton of adult novels, and when I came upon this one last year I really enjoyed it. Since the sequel comes out tomorrow, and I got my copy early, I got a chance to re-read it and then the sequel and once again I could not put it down. Jacinda is a cool character who yearns to reach her full potential and to not be cut down by her pride (community per say). The book is fast paced and once you dive in it, you won't put it down.

I don't believe in spoilers or summaries, but in order to peak your interests, I will give a few hints into the plot. There is classic forbidden romance, powers, and a new school. Its everything that a good young adult novel can have, a first day, annoying classmates and a hot new guy. I really get tired of the irresistible guy, because all books practically have that now, but this one has a cool twist. Hunter vs. Prey scenario which takes wit and power. Its really a cool book you should definitely read it!
