There’s breaking news on TV at Frankie’s house—a protest to demand justice! Frankie’s mama, a journalist, gets a call to cover the story, and Frankie wants to do her own reporting, too. But what is a protest, exactly, and why do people do it? Along with her news crew, including Farrah the doll, Dan the teddy bear, and Nina the cat, Frankie prepares a feature story by doing research and conducting interviews with Papa and big sister Raven. And when the toys decide to have their own protest in support of the local movement, Frankie is on the scene to help make signs, march, and, of course, get the scoop! In this latest installment of the winning series, Frankie explores big ideas like racial injustice and activism with her supportive family and learns more about journalism in the process. Young newshounds will learn along with Frankie through all-caps vocabulary terms and a glossary at the back.

Frankie & Friends: The Big Protest is a sequel that delves into important aspects of journalism in an age-appropriate way for early elementary readers. The illustrations are plentiful and combined with the enlarged font making this beginning chapter book feel like the next step to reading independence while still providing plenty of support. Frankie sees people protesting on the news and at first is afraid but her family teaches her the basic concept of a protest in general terms. She explores the idea of a protest and the knowledge of how to be a reporter like her mom to act out her news broadcast with her stuffed animals. Important vocabulary is well defined through context and a more detailed definition is provided in the back of the book. Overall, this book is an age-appropriate way of explaining the act of a protest in gaining social justice without being graphic or specific to anything that might polarize a reader.

Frankie and Friends : The Big Protest is the second book in the series. The book tackles the complex topic of protests and social justice in an age-appropriate way.
As the daughter of a news anchor, Frankie has learned all about journalism and what makes a great reporter. A protest on television causes Frankie to have many questions about why people are protesting. Using her toys as her news crew, Frankie decides to create her own news program. In Frankie's news program, she interviews her dad and sister about protests to get their perspective. Frankie helps her older sister Raven make signs for a protest she is participating in and even puts on a mini protest with the help of her toys.
What I Liked: Christine Platt does a wonderful job of discussing what a protest is and how even children can make their voices heard. Through Frankie's love of journalism, she engagingly delves into the topic. Also, there is a glossary at the end of the book that defines terms that readers may not be familiar with. This book is perfect for young readers due to its large font and brightly colored illustrations.
