Garlic and the Witch is the sequel to the popular book Garlic and the Vampire. I hadn't read the first book but found that Garlic and the Witch can be read as a stand-alone book.
Witch Agnes grows a small garden of living vegetables including Garlic and her friend's Carrot and Celery. Garlic is the sweetest character who is a true friend to all. When Garlic notices her body is changing, she discovers that she and her other veggie friends will one day become humans. Garlic isn't sure she's ready for the change. In addition, Garlic goes on a little adventure with her friend Count that takes her out of her comfort zone but also helps her grow.
The book focuses a lot on how change can be scary, but Garlic realizes that experiences that feel scary can still be fun. This line "I realize that even the fun stuff will have some scary moments" is remarkably relatable and written in such a way that children can understand it.
Bree Paulsen is such a talented illustrator. She uses fall colors in a muted tone that complements the story. Paulsen captures Garlic's emotions so well in her facial expressions.
Garlic and the Witch is a beautiful graphic novel that is sweet and touching.
