About the Book

What do you do with your last day on earth?

There are 27 hours and fifteen minutes left until an asteroid strikes North America, and, for Emerson and everyone else who didn’t leave, the world will end. But Emerson’s world already ended when she ran away from home last year. Since then she has lived on the streets, relying on her wits and her friend Vince to help her find places to sleep and food to eat.

The city’s quieter now that most people are gone, and no one seems to know what to do as the end approaches. But then Emerson and Vince meet Carl, who tells them that he has been granting people’s wishes. He gave his car away so a woman could take her son to see the ocean for the first time, and he gives Emerson and Vince all the money he has in his wallet.

Suddenly this last day seems full of possibility. Emerson and Vince can grant a lot of wishes in 27 hours — maybe even their own.

  1. Naysha says:

I feel like the end of the world would bring out the best in people. It’s the end of the world and I’m sure everyone would be aware of it, so what would be the point of worthless emotions like anger and hatred? I feel like everyone would spend their last 27 hours and 15 minutes loving everyone they have and what they have, living life to the fullest.

  2. Kristy says:

Possibly the worst. B/c if you know the world is going to end soon (like 27hr, 15 min), you know there will not be time for consequences. But, if you happen to believe in a higher power or have some sort of awakening, then maybe you would change and live for the better at the end.

  3. Cassie H says:

Both. It depends on the individuals character.

  4. Shannon Mizikoski says:

Unfortunately, I think the worst. I’d like to be positive and say the best but… I don’t think that’s what would happen.

  5. Dianne Barahona says:

I think it could go either way. It all depends on how the people are as individuals. There are those that have a positive outlook regardless of the fact that something drastic like the world ending is taking place. Then you have those that are full of negativity and could just lash out at any given moment. If they knew the world was coming to an end, that could give them an open window to just do all kinds of horrible things because there wouldn’t be any consequences waiting for them afterwards.

  6. Caroline says:

    Worst.

  7. Danielle D. says:

I think it would be a mix of both, people are all going to react differently, regardless of whether everything is coming to an end or not.

  8. Carol says:

I think it would bring out the worst, because without the fear of having to deal with the consequences of what you do, people would do crazy stuff and care only about themselves!

  9. Sara Stevens says:

A little bit of both. You will have the kind hearted who will help others and then there are the ones who will take the cool stuff even though the world will end. Majority will surround themselves with love, family and friends and others with possessions.

  10. Jane says:

Fear and lack of consequences would bring out the worst.

  11. Cindy says:

I think that the end of the world would bring out the worst in people because they can finally do whatever they want without any consequences. Some may want to finish their bucket list and in their haste to do so, they might not stop to think of other people. Also, people may want to live out the rest of their lives in comfort and luxury, so they may not think about or care for others.

  12. mithila says:

this reminds me of nightvale so i automatically love this cover. the synopsis sounds great!

  13. Lillian says:

I think it depends on the individuals, but mainly both. People tend to behave well because they fear punishment, and with the end of the world coming there would be no chance of punishment. Even generally nice people might end up saying any mean things they’ve been holding in because they might think “it doesn’t matter now, we’ll all die at the end of the day. There are certainly some nice people though, such as Carl in this book, who would try to help everyone enjoy their last day on Earth.

  14. Skylar Love says:

    The best in people

  15. Cecilia Ewing says:

I think it definitely depends on the person. I think the end of the world would bring out whatever type of personality that person already had, whether it had previously been on the surface or not. If someone is naturally selfish, I don’t think the end of the world would necessarily cure them of that. Just like I think a person with such solid optimism would be taken down by such an event.

  16. Andrew says:

The best or the worst depends on the person. Some people might say “screw it” and do what they want without remorse, others will want to go down as the best person they can be.

  17. lauren says:

    depends on the individual’s thinking.

  18. Rachel Danielson says:

This is such a cool idea for a story and the cover is amazing. I think it would bring out the worst because people would feel unprepared for the “end” and wouldn’t really know what to do. Hopefully there would be people like -Carl- who would be happy to grant people’s wishes.

  19. Claire Wycoff says:

I think the end of the world would bring out the best in people. In your last days, I feel like everyone will want to be happy and not deal with a lot of stuff. People would just be nice and keep to themselves.

  20. Hannah says:

Honestly, the worst. People panic when put into situations where they feel they are in danger and lash out in terrible ways.

  21. Hannah says:

Honestly, the worst. People panic when put into situations where they feel they are in danger and lash out in terrible ways.

  22. Shyanne T says:

I think the worst. Everyone will panic and go crazy!

  23. bn100 says:

    worst

  24. Brielle Bauer says:

I think it would be the worst because people would blow things out of proportion and there would be a lot of drama.

  25. Bri Pete says:

I think it would depend on who the person really is and how they react to different situations. Some might be calm, and nice but some might turn mean and selfish.

  26. Lucy Magat says:

I think it depends on that particular person. One person might use this time to do everything she/he wants to do but one person might just be depressed about the world ending and decide to not do anything. I guess it just depends on the person 🙂

  27. Lyndsey says:

I honestly think it could bring out either, it depends on the person. 🙂

  28. Allana says:

Perhaps a bit of both. If it’s the end of the world, people tend to help each other in order to have a great number of survivors to redeem the damaged world (if possible). However, it can also bring out the worst because there are people who will only think of their own survival. It doesn’t matter anymore whether the person you were talking to merely five seconds ago survives or not, if the opportunity presents itself, you’re obviously going to jump on it.

  29. Sui Generis says:

I think it would be the worst because all will be thinking how to keep alive and will do anything just to be alive

  30. Stacy says:

Normally I am optimistic, but I think it would bring out the worst in people. I have seen it just during natural disasters. Most people think only of themselves and do not want to help others.

  31. Emma Morian says:

I think the countdown to the end of the planet would ultimately result in the better of people appearing. Last impressions count too! And even though it is said people “Live together, die alone,” I think friendships will be fixed in time for their end on the planet.

  32. Coleen says:

The end of the world would bring out both best and worst. Best because this would be the time wherein they’ll learn from their mistake, say the things that they want to say, ask for forgiveness and forgive and value the time they have left. Worst because its the end of their lives, the people you love will die and they’re running out of time.

I also think that it depends if what kind of personality you have. You can be strong enough or too weak that you’d go nuts knowing that there’s no more tomorrow.

  33. Chili says:

I feel like the end of the world would make most people turn their backs on each other instead of supporting each other like we should.

  36. Andrea says:

I would like to think the end of the world would bring out the best in people, but with all the violence I see on the news, I think it would inevitably bring out the worst in most — no consequences. But for me, I wouldn’t change. I always try to be a good person anyway.
