This lively collection of brightly illustrated comics does an excellent job of helping early readers nail down short vowel sounds. Each comic focuses on one short vowel sound, and there are plenty of sight words to aid early readers as they learn. The back of the book has all of the featured words grouped by vowel sounds so that readers can practice them once more and see exactly what they were learning as they read the comics. The illustrations are vivid with plenty of movement. The only drawback I found when reading this aloud to my 5 year old was the nature of the collection leads to a choppy story-telling experience, one that caused her to ask me a lot of questions as she tried to make the stories somehow relate to each other. Altogether, this is a thoroughly engaging book that is perfect for early readers, classrooms, and libraries.
