Heart and Shadow includes the two stories of the Valkyrie Duology. The story is an urban fantasy that mixes Norse Mythology with other mythical creatures and beings like vampires, demons, and angels. The modern twist creates a page-turning story that you just can't put down. Malin is a strong young woman who not only has to deal with the typical teenage challenges but also must train and live as a notorious Valkryie.
Hocking is a fantastic world builder. She is able to create a world that is both familiar with and new at the same time. Both books are incredibly fast-paced and entertaining. There isn't a dull moment. Through both books, there are lots of little twists and subplots that kept the story going. While at some points parts were predictable it helped move the story along and kept me deep inside the world of Heart and Shadow. It was easy to pick up the book and read for hours.
If you enjoy mythology, adventure, and romance Heart and Shadow is for you.
